Matchbook Collecting: Antique Matchbook Covers

My cousin’s wife’s father gave me these awesome matchbook covers! I have collected matchbooks for at least a decade but these are by far the oldest in my collection. He has preserved them in baseball card covers. I love the variety in the subject matter, there is even a political matchbook cover. My favorite is the Budweiser matchbook cover that advertises the new “cans.” On the back it says “Make This Test! Drink Budweiser for Five Days. On the sixth day try to drink a sweet beer - You will want the Budweiser flavor thereafter – Never sweet, never syrupy, always uniform, always distinctive. I love the unique and thoughtful gift.

I don’t know how to figure out how much they are worth, especially since I’m not sure what their condition is (since they were stored in an attic). It is hard to price collectibles. My advice is to check eBay and see how much they are going for. I just saw 59 covers from the 30s-60s going for $5 on eBay. You could divide them up in lots by date range and sell them that way. Although, you may want to hold on to them since matchbooks are cool. You could create some awesome art with them.

I have several hundred matchbooks that I have collected since I was a young lady. (Quite odd for a little lady to collect?)
My hubby wants to build a bar in our basement (looks like a 1950′s diner) and put them on top and cover with glass! I think it will look great!
Maybe give you guys an idea to do with your collections.

That’s awesome, Lisa! You’ll have to post pictures when he is done. I’m sure it will look incredible! The bar top would be truly original and a work of art.

The only thing I could think to do with them would be to make a room divider with panes of glass and sandwich the matchbook covers between the two pieces of glass (so they wouldn’t be damaged). However, that seemed difficult and also impractical (I have no need for a room divider). Maybe you can make some matchstick art to display on the walls – check out the inspiration here (http://spluch.blogspot.com/2006/11/matchstick-art.html) and here (http://www.matchstickmarvels.com/museum.html).

This caught my eye because I now have several albums of matchbook covers that my Grandfather collected. I am trying to find out how much they would be worth and sell them.
Did anyone ever find out where or how to go about appraising their worth?

I don’t think anyone figured out how to appraise them, but I did find this link, which discusses the hobby and lists a bunch of clubs that may have more information: http://www.auctionbytes.com/cab/abu/y204/m10/abu0129/s07
