Tim Tams in the US

I was shocked to see Tim Tams at Giant today, even marked with “Australia’s Favorite Cookie.” They are $2.99 a pack and come in original and caramel (none of the other Dangerous Liason flavors). I have no idea why they are here but I am happy and can’t wait to report how they compare to the originals. The weird thing is that they are being manufactured by Pepperidge Farms — not Arnott’s. I wonder if the recipe is the same and what made them want to bring them here?

Dia de Los Muertos Sugar Skulls

My sister made these cute sugar skulls out of granulated sugar and some eggs whites. They are perfect to break apart and use in coffee and I crushed one up to use in lieu of syrup in my waffles. I love how cute they look.

Rudolph's Cinnamon Churros

I recently found an intriguing new snack at the dollar store: Cinnamon Churros Crispy Sweet Twists (sweetened with Splenda). The back of the bag revealed the following information:

Cinnamon churros are a traditional Spanish dessert that’s found its place in many cultures. Now you can enjoy this delightful treat anytime you want! And because they’re fun to eat, kids will love them, too. Rudolph’s Cinnamon Churros are a light, multigrain snack with the perfect blend of sugar and warm cinnamon. And they’re TRANS FAT FREE.

Okay, so they mysteriously contain both sugar and Splenda. I was hoping they would taste like the cinnamon twists at Taco Bell but these are nothing like them. They’re really overly flavored. They taste like one of those cinnamon hard candies you get at doctor’s offices and Hour Eyes. Ugh, they’re nothing like the cinnamon churros from my favorite local sporting event….or in my case, they ones they sell at 7-Eleven.

Dog Lover’s Cookies – The Cutest Dog Cookies Ever

These cookies are easy to make

My friend Marisa sent me this link to the cutest dog cookies ever. The original post from a girl named Amanda’s Singaporean Cooking Blog. They are actually really easy to make. I’ve Americanized the recipe to help everyone here make it (and extrapolated on ingredients we will have to substitute). You still will have to guess and round up some of these measurements just because it is easier:

Dog Cookies

Ingredients:
80g/12.6 tbsn of butter, softened at room temperature
80g/5.6 tbsn of Ovaltine or another malt-based drink (check local Hispanic store for Milo)
200g/.875 cups of cake flour
25g/1.75 tbsn corn flour
25g/1.75 tbsn milk powder

Fillings:
100g/7 tbsn chocolate chips
20g/4.2 tsp cornflakes (optional, crushed)

Toppings:
Chocolate rice (perhaps substitute with chocolate sprinkles)
Koko Krunch (this is for the ears, so look for a cereal that resembles the picture, I can’t think of one but I think a store brand might be a good bet)

Steps:

Pre-heat oven to 150deg C/300deg F. Line baking tray with baking paper and set aside.
Cream butter and Ovaltine/Milo for about three minutes till pale in color (Ovaltine will give it a darker color).
Add in cake flour, cornflour and milk powder and beat for about one minute to form
dough.
Divide dough into 10g each. Flatten each piece of dough, and add in the fillings (some chocolate chips and cornflakes). Roll into balls (keeping the fillings inside).
Decorate as desired, using the ingredients to make the features of the dogs. Insert two pieces of Koko Krunch to form the ears, chocolate rice for the eyes, and a chocolate chip in the centre for the nose.
Bake at 150 deg C for about 35- 40mins. Or till golden brown.
Leave to cool on wire rack before storing in an airtight container.

Rap Snacks – The Snack of Choice

I went to beer K-1 on Columbia Pike and bought a bag of Rap Snacks. I don’t know if anyone else eats them but the packaging is disturbing. The one I bought features Lil’ Romeo and the flavor is Bar-b-quin’ with my Honey. His advice to consumers of Rap Snacks is to “Stay in School.” The back of the bag states that these are the “Official Snack of Hip Hop.” They do taste pretty good, though.

It actually gets worse, because other rappers have their own signature bags with their own advice. My personal favorites are:
